PRACTICE GUIDE, May 2026

Awe

The Transformative Power of Everyday Wonder

Please remember: You are the source of wisdom. This guide simply offers support and practices for your unique gifts to emerge with more confidence and clarity.

Dear Friend,

This month, we are exploring the experience of Awe - and how it shapes our emotional and mental well-being.

The psychologist Dacher Keltner describes awe as the feeling of being in the presence of something vast - something that stretches our understanding of the world.

Science has discovered that awe sits right at the heart of a meaningful and fulfilling life.

And yet, we spend so much of our time focused on what awe is not.

It is not found in money.
Or status or accomplishment.
In endless entertainment.
Or the accumulation of things.

These simply don’t have the power to touch our souls.

Awe reminds us of something more enduring:

That life’s greatest treasures are not owned. They are witnessed.

And the beautiful thing is - awe is available to us in our everyday lives.

Standing before the ocean or a mountain.

Music that transports us.
Dance, movement, or rhythm.
A prayer or a chant.
Reaching out to a friend in need.
Art, poetry or a sacred text.

In these moments, something shifts.

Our usual way of seeing the world softens.

We feel humbled. More connected. More open. More alive.

And perhaps most importantly, we sense that we are part of something larger.

Through simple practices, we will begin to see again - almost like children - meeting the world with fresh eyes. It could be through:

  • Awe walks: slowing down and noticing sounds and textures

  • Awe spots: letting yourself be absorbed by something beautiful

  • Seeking the unfamiliar: music, art and sacred texts that expand us

  • Mystical encounters: prayer, stillness or a kind gesture

Awe is waiting, just beyond the edge of our attention.

This month you are invited to look a little closer. To resist technology. To be available to what moves you.

Thank you for being here.

LOVE, JONO

  • Yesterday, I had a conversation that stayed with me.

I went to see my mechanic - someone I’ve known for years - and he told me he’s closing his business.

    He’s 51.

For most of his life, he’s worked hard. Built something steady. Reliable.

And now he’s walking away from it.

He said he wants to “chase the sun.”

Over the past few years, his wife has been through cancer. Four long years.

And more recently, he’s been diagnosed with Graves’ disease.

Something in all of this has shifted him.

He spoke about giving his life to God.
About no longer wanting to spend his days chasing money or more work.
About wanting to live inside the beauty of ordinary life.

There was something in the way he spoke that moved me.

    Not dramatic.
    Not philosophical.

    Just clear.

As if something had been rearranged in him.

And I could feel it as I listened.

    A quiet knowing:

    How fragile life is.
And how available it is, all at once.

The day before, I had visited a friend and his partner that I was meeting for the first time.

After leaving, he sent me a text saying that he and his partner had hugged after I left - with tears in their eyes.

    Not out of sadness.

But from a shared recognition of how much they value our friendship.

That something real exists between us.

    Effortless. Warm. Unconditional.

    And again, I felt it.

    That same quiet opening.

That sense that life is not something we need to manufacture.

It’s something we are already inside of.

I’ve been noticing, more and more, that I can almost measure the level of aliveness in my life…

by how much space I give to these moments.

And how much is taken up by something else.

Technology has a way of filling that space.

    Not in a dramatic way.

    But gradually.

Alluring me into false comfort and distraction.

Until the texture of life begins to flatten.

And yet, when I step back - even a little - something returns.

    Awe returns.

In small ways I find it.

    A walk, without a destination.
Standing at the edge of the ocean.
    A moment of prayer.
    Sitting in a divine liturgy.
Listening - really listening - to a friend.
Finding a piece of music that opens something in me.
Lying next to someone I love… or even just being close to another living being.

Reading words that have carried meaning across generations.

All these are at our fingertips.

And each one has the capacity to open the world again.

I’m beginning to see that awe is something that emerges…

when I allow myself to be here.

    Fully.

And perhaps that is the quiet invitation of this month:

    Not to add more.

To resist the false nourishment of technology.

To notice what is already alive around you.

And to let it touch us.

The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.

Journal Questions

1

What moments of awe have I experienced recently - however small - and what did I notice in my body, my attention, or my sense of time?

2

Where in my life could I slow down and pay closer attention - as if I were seeing it for the first time?

3

What in my current way of living might be dulling my sense of awe - and what would it look like to gently loosen its hold?

“Magic doesn't sweep you away;
it gathers you into the body of the present moment so fully
that all your explanations fall away.

The ordinary - in all its plain and simple outrageousness - begins to shine.

Every facet of the world is awake, and you within it.”
